3 day's Thumri Festival 2018 concluded with mesmerising performances of Veterans and Young Artists, enthralling the jam packed Audience.
Thumri Festival was cherished by the full house audience on all the three days. Thumri specialist Savita Devi stole the show with her powerful performance
The 8th edition of Thumri Festival organized by Sahitya Kala Parishad, Department of Art, Culture and Languages, Government of Delhi came to a close on September 16, 2018. The 3-day event at Kamani Auditorium saw a full house audience who cherished each performance of the artists.
The musical event was inaugurated by the chief guest and the Minister for Social Welfare, Govt. Of NCT of Delhi Sh. Rajendra Pal Gautam.
One the first day, the event started with the performance of Padmaja Chakraborty, who sang various forms like Khamaj Thumri in Jat taal, Tappa in Raga Kafi and Kajri in Raag Mishra Pilu in Keherwa taal. The second performance was by the renowned vocalist and doyen of Kirana Gharana - Sri Jayateerth Mevundi. He mesmerized the audience with Raag Tilang Thumri, kafi Thumri, Jogiya Thumri, and Raag Pahadi. His Jogiya Thumri brought alive the legacy of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan Saab. And for the young Mishras says, Assured the audience that Thumri is in very good hands.
The evening was culminated with a power packed performance by Shubha Mudgal who performed Bol Banau Thumri and Bandish ki Thumri in which she sang rare types of Thumri.
On the second day, the audience enjoyed a soulful thumri recital by Nila Sinha Roy. Followed by the performance, was another melodic voice of Kumud Diwan, a renowned semi-classical vocalist and an acclaimed exponent of Thumri. She performed on Raag Mishra kafi – ‘piya toh manat nahi; followed by her second act were two short bandish. Her last performance, as a tribute to Late Girija Devi, was jhoola of Mishra pahadi which the later used to sing. The evening was ended with the double act by the inimitable duo of the Indian classical music Pandit Rajan and Pandit Sajan Mishra. Their performances was appreciated by everyone.
The last day of the Thumri festival was started with the performance of Indira Naik, a Sufi and Ghazal singer, trained in Patiala gayaki. She gave a brilliant performances starting with Raag Pilu in which she sang ‘Tum radhe bano shyaam’, her second act was raag pahadi – ‘Baghon mein pade jhoole’. Her third act was raag kaushik dhwani and the song was ‘mene lakhon ke bol sahe’. Her last performance was Dadra in Bhairavi where she mesmerised the audience with the song ‘Balam Harjai’.
The performance was followed by Rahul-Rohit Mishra, the Hindustani Classical Vocalist Duo of Benaras Gharana and Disciples of Padmavibhushan Girija Devi. They presented raag des thumri on ‘mora saiyaan bulave aadhi raat’, their second performance was Dadra with the song ‘purab videsh se aayi goriya’. Their third act was thumri from Bihar – ‘humse nazariya kahi pheri balam’ and the last performance was Dadra – ‘Deewane ke shyam’
The grand finale was made memorable by the performance of Thumri specialist Savita Devi, who has learnt the light, classical forms of Hindustani music - the Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri and Tappa of the Benaras Gharana from her mother and the late legendary Thumari singer Siddheshwari Devi. The auditorium was filled with her powerful performances starting with Raag shahana based bandish – ‘kari ghata chhayi re’, followed by her second song on ‘hori mein khelungi shyam se datke’. Her third act was in Bhojpuri – ‘arre suni la khi saiyaan mora jogi bhaile re’ and fourth performance was dadra – ‘mana mor khanava radhe’. She ended the evening with her last performance on jhoola in which she sang – ‘dheere se jhoolao banwari’.
Talking about the Thumri festival, Savita Devi said, “I am happy that Sahitya Kala Parishad is celebrating the 8th edition and my wishes are with them and may they keep celebrating the thumri year after year. This festival is an outcome of two side collaboration of the artists and Sahitya Kala Parishad. I feel proud to be a part of this collaboration, where they not only bring the veterans but also promote upcoming talents.â€

We Thank all the artists who have performed and been part of thumri festival and made it popular. We are bringing young artists to sing with the popular faces which is attracting a young crowd to the festival and taking the heritage of thumri forward.â€
Sahitya Kala Parishad will be presenting Awaam ki Aawaaz in Central Park on 29th September 2018.
