SYMPOSIUM ON THE WORKS OF SHOBHA BROOTA BY KALA DRISHTI

Kala Drishti, a Delhi based NGO creating a platform for upcoming artists, recently organized a symposium on the works of eminent artist Ms. Shobha Broota at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi.

 

Presented by Amrita Varma, an art specialist, the event saw some upcoming talents and students who came to meet the renowned artist Ms. Shobha Broota and discuss her experience in the world of art. Ms. Amrita took the viewer through the journey of Ms. Broota's art from the very beginning till date, discussing all its subtle shades. Her style of creation of artefacts is very different and outstanding. The extreme minimalism of her work highlights her interest in the role of texture in abstraction. At this convention, various aspects of her movement from figurative to the abstract, which she is famous for were discussed along with their relevance and connections to her life. The audience also got an understanding into abstraction and how to connect with and understand it, which has been a mystery to most before.

 

Afterwards, there was a discussion session where the audience asked her about her work and how she adjusted in the world of art during the initial days and how she evolved from portrait painting to abstract painting. She also shared some useful insights on how to carry on doing the work and deal with criticism, let it be positive or negative. Being an international artist, she also discussed the market scenario around the world. The discussion went on regarding and the guidance that she gave to nurture the budding artists and their work.

 

Born in Delhi in 1943, Ms. Shobha Broota, hails from a family rich in artistic traditions, and is one of India’s most well established contemporary artists. She has a diploma in Fine Arts from College of Arts, Delhi and Master Degree in Vocal Indian classical. She has been felicitated with various awards like awards by AIFACS and Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi; Art Educationist Award by NDMC, Delhi; scholarships and fellowships by Ministry of Culture, India, National level Alva's Varna Virasat Award by Alva ‘s Education Foundation Mangalore 2018 to name a few.

 

Amrita Varma, as an advisor and an individual is keen on looking at the finer aspects of Indian art grow, she  has witnessed the various aspects of Shobha Broota's work over decades. Sharing her views on this symposium, she said, “I have been fortunate to talk in expanse of Shobha Broota’s work. With the kind of her work in abstraction, it was challenging task, but a much needed for the people to know it because she is one of the legends in abstract art. Though her work has been showcased around the world,she still keeps herself understated. With this symposium, we aim to make the Indian audience aware of her work specifically and also the heritage of abstraction that we carry even today”

 

Adding to this, Anjali Jain <main trustee> of Kala Drishti said, “Shobha Broota’s style of work is abstract and very minimalistic, a style very different from a normal one. Her creations have an essence of something deeper in life. I have personally experienced a sense of spirituality while looking at her work.She has a close interaction in metaphysics and deep reverse for the divine being.Ms. Broota is a very religious person and with her art, one can also sense a presence of a supreme power.”

 

Kala Drishti, is primarily an artist-run trust with support of upcoming artists as their primary agenda. The programs and initiatives are wide and varied, venturing into all realms of the artistic sphere, including advisory, camps, residencies, art awareness programs, outreach programs, seminars, symposiums, art appreciation programs, corporate gifting and so on. Kala Drishti, a trust conceived by artists themselves identifies this problem and realizes that for a self-sustaining industry that faces uniform growth and is able to sustain participating enthusiasts and artists, we need to start by creating an interest in such activates among all reaches of the society. They also works in education sector by giving various entrance exam classes to the children who wanted to pursue art as a profession also gave classes to villagers who showed their keen interest in art for free.
