Theatre in West Bengal is in a grave situation: Arghya Dey Sarkar

New Delhi, November 22, 2018: Bengali play Hoi Boi Choi director Arghya Dey Sarkar has revealed that the scenario of children theatre in West Bengal is suffering as the parents are not keen to send their children for drama classes as compared to music or painting. Bengal, one of the birth places of theatre in India, does not fascinate its audience anymore because they feel it’s a not a lucrative career. Arghya, who established the group Pragati in Howrah, said they have still continued their efforts despite the rejections because their main aim is to motivate the children, especially from the backward class, to lead them for a better living. “We mainly work with those kids, who don’t even have proper house to live in. They enjoy doing theatre but they get scolding from their parents. Our original female lead (a 14-year-old girl) could not come for the play here because her teacher didn’t allow her to come because she feels our group has spoilt her,”Arghya said. We made the last minute change and somebody else had played her part. But Arghya and the other members of the group haven’t lost their hope and rather aim to work hard to get their dream of making backward class empowered.

Introducing a slightly effeminate character was nothing intentional: Dir Arpita Dhagat

New Delhi, November 22, 2018: Multilingual play Ukhaanubased on the American dark fantasy adventure Alice in Wonderland, had presented slightly effeminate character in the form of one of its pivotal character Red Queen.  The play’s director, Arpita Dhagat, has revealed that there was nothing intentional to present the character in that way. She said when they were rehearsing the play, she asked all her actors to choose the characters not on the basis of gender but the way they relate to their traits. Harshdeepsingh Jadega, one of the actors, took up the role and he played it the way he wanted her to be. “The only mandate which I had given to my actors was not to watch the film. There was no gender choice also. In our play Mad Hatter was played by a girl and Red Queen by a boy. It was quite an unconventional choice but audience was quite convinced by both the roles.” She only had one thing in mind that the character doesn’t end up looking like a drag queen. Harshdeepsingh said he never witnessed any reservation against the portrayal be it in Ahmedabad or in Delhi. “When I performed the same play in Ahmedabad, there was hardly any child in the audience. There were mostly adults. It never happened that anybody had any uncomfortable comment about my portrayal of the character,”said Harshdeep.
