Luck eluded
Delhi yet again as the team went down 2-4 to Mumbai in their last home match of
the year. Delhi failed capitalise on their early lead, and an unfortune penalty
and an own goal elongated the thirst for the team’s first win of this season.
Playing the
reverse encounter, Rene Mihelic started up front, as JosepGombau fielded a
starting XI similar to the one he fielded against Bengaluru FC. Andrija
Kaluderovic was the only change who had start from the bench.
The home team
made a strong start to the match creating a break through right in the 3rd
minute, courtesy, former Dynamos’ player Souvik Chakrabarti’s own goal. It was
Tebar, Carmona and Chhangte, who crafted the goal and Chakrabarti executed it
for the hosts.
It was a half of
muscle tussle as Mumbai tried physically overpowering Delhi, but the craft of
Delhi players neutralised the visitors attempts. This resulted in a lot of
flares in the field, right from the start of the match.
The first half
was devoid of any other significant action with both teams struggling to create
something concrete in the final third. The half ended with the home team
walking back with their slime lead.
The second half
started on a dramatic note for Delhi with Pritam Kotal conceding a penalty for
the team. Mumbai’s Rafael Bastos did no mistake and slotted the equaliser into
the top right corner of Albino’s goal in the 48th minute.
Things became
further difficult for Delhi when a defensive attempt of Marti Crespi went
horribly wrong and he ended up heading the ball onto his own net in the 61st
minute. Delhi bounced back into the game in the 64th minute with
Gianni Zuiverloon heading a powerful ball into the Mumbai net.
But the horror
for Albino was not over yet, with Mumbai getting their lead back in the 69th
minute; and this time around it was Raynier Fernandes slotting his first Indian
Super League goal. The visitors lead was
further strengthened in the 80th minute, with Paulo Machado slotting
the ball beyond Albino’s reach.
Towards the
dying moments of the match, Gombau fielded all his attacking options,
substituting Bikramjit, Pritam Kotal and Marti Crespi and brining in Andrija
Kaluderovic, Daniel Lalhlimpuia and Rana Gharami. But it was Mumbai custodian
Amdrinder’s cool headedness which kept the Delhi attacks at bay.
Andrija almost
got onto the score sheet in the dying moments, but Subhasis Bose’s goal-line
header robbed Delhi of the chance.
The last match
of 2018 at the JLN Stadium ended in favour of the visitors, Mumbai City FC with
them going home with a 2-4 victory.
