Most people are not aware that numerous Hindu deities are very actively worshipped in Japan. In fact, there are hundreds of shrines to Saraswati alone. There are innumerable representations of Lakshmi, Indra, Brahma, Ganesha, Garuda and other deities. In fact, deities we have practically forgotten in India, such as Vayu and Varuna are still worshipped in Japan.
Sanskrit letters are to be found in practically every home in Japan. The ‘havan’ is conducted in more than 1,200 temples every day in Japan, with Sanskrit chanting.
Noted Buddhist scholar-Historian, filmmaker, writer Benoy K Behl, said ,"In many ways, I find that Japan has preserved ancient Hindu traditions, even when they may have changed here in India. A study of Japanese Buddhism also provides missing links in our study of the evolution of Buddhism in its present form in Tibet."
He continued, "This is a subject which I have been studying over the past two decades. This has resulted in my film on ‘Indian Deities Worshipped in Japan’, made for the XPD Division, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. It will be screened by the India Habitat Centre on Sunday, the 12th of May at 7:00 pm, in Gulmohar Hall."
"In the meantime, my book ‘Hindu Deities Worshipped in Japan’ has also just come out. This book will also be on display on the occasion of the screening", sign off Benoy K Behl.
