Are you okay? How are you feeling now? Are you able to move your hands? Usually these questions are asked to patients post completion of a surgery, but when these questions are asked to the patient during his surgery, it is no less than a wonder.
One such unique surgery was successfully conducted to remove a cancerous tumor from the patient’s brainat Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital and Research Center (BMCHRC),Jaipur. This one of a kind surgery was performed for 3 hours while the patient remains awake and alert.
Neuro-Oncologistof BMCHRC,Dr. Nitin Dwivedi and his team conducted the surgery on CSIF jawan
While giving insights about the procedure, Dr. Dwivedi informed that the Patient initially reported the weakness in his left hand and after thorough investigation tumor was identified in his brain. Since, the tumor was in such an important part of the brain, we have higher chances of loosing controls of the hands and face movements. On the contrary, if the lump is removed by normal operation, patient is prone to getparalyzed on hands and face. But with the help of this procedure, we lowered the risk of damage to functional areas of the brain that could affect the vision, movement, or speech.
Dr. Dwivedi further explained that the biggest advantage of Awake surgery is that, if there is any weakness in any part of the body while removing the tumor, it could be handled immediately.
Post surgery, the weakness of the hand gradually improved and today the patient is able to use his hand properly. The patient has shared happiness and gratitude to the hospital.
