Taming the Palm: How Only Consumers Can Save the Planet

Greenlitfest (www.greenlitfest.com) is happy to invite you to a discussion on Taming the Palm: How Only Consumers Can Save the Planet on 21st May 2022 from 5.30 pm - 6.30 pm.

Consumers world over know little about how they are endangering rich forests and how millions of workers are made to slog in terrible conditions to bring palm oil to their table.

By itself palm oil is not bad but it is how irresponsibly it is produced. With palm oil increasingly contributing to biodiesel there is a dire need for a massive drive to ensure it is produced responsibly.

For India, being the largest consumer of palm oil, this conversation is vital as it seems oblivious to how it is directly contributing to the destruction of large ecosystems in South East Asia. What options does India have?

Join me in my conversation with award-winning journalist Jocelyn C. Zuckerman about her book Planet Palm: How Palm Oil Ended Up in Everything – and Endangered the World. Her book is a deep investigation into the dark side of the palm oil industry.

Consumer movements against palm oil in many markets are nascent. With hard-hitting facts Jocelyn's book will help consumers make an informed choice.

This conversation will be less about what devastation palm oil has already caused but will be about how to reimagine its future that is earth and people-friendly.

We will also explore how the environment-friendly hybrid coconut palm can replace oil palm.

Consumers, policy makers, environmental activists, and industry leaders will find this conversation inspiring.

About the Speakers

Jocelyn C. Zuckerman - For most of my career, I’ve worked as an editor, beginning at a little lifestyle magazine called InFashion and spending a few years at travel trades before landing at Gourmet in 1996. I spent 12 years there, ending as deputy editor, and had the pleasure of editing stories by David Foster Wallace, Gary Shteyngart, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Junot Diaz, Stacy Schiff, Richard Ford, Michael Lewis, Nina Teicholz, and many others.

In the years since Gourmet folded, I’ve been mostly freelance, aside from shortish gigs as articles editor of OnEarth, the now-defunct magazine of the Natural Resources Defense Council, or NRDC, and executive editor of Whole Living, the now-also-defunct sustainability-focused magazine put out by Martha Stewart. I have also been an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and a contributing editor at both Modern Farmer and Condé Nast Traveler.

My articles, which range from straight travel pieces to features on issues related to the environment, agriculture, nutrition, and the developing world, have appeared in AudubonThe American ProspectFast CompanyThe New York Times Magazine, and lots of other places. I’ve been the recipient of a James Beard Award for feature writing and of fellowships from the Alicia Patterson Foundation, the Carter Center, The Peter Jennings Project, and the New York Times Company Foundation.

Along the way, I studied French literature at the Sorbonne and English literature at Hamilton College, and I got a Master’s from Columbia’s Journalism School. I also spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer, teaching English and math in a little village in western Kenya. These days I’m based in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, where I live with my husband, our two daughters, and our dogs.
